It's official - summer is here. And with it comes open windows, twirling breezes through your house, singing birds and crickets, and lots of stimulation for your cats. I know my Jazzy and Oreo spend a lot more time "window-hunting," studying the lay of the land.
The big Cat Question then: Is your cat an outdoor cat? No worries...this isn't a trick question. I would say more of a lifestyle question. Should we let them outside to roam, hunt and satisfy their natural instinct? Or, play it safe and perch a luxury cat tower in front of your largest window and call that "outdoors."
You have to look at your lifestyle. Go down to the local pet supply store and buy a leash for your cat. Do you have the patience to train Whiskers to learn how to walk in it? Step, step, roll around in the grass. Repeat. Repeat again. You've walked 10 feet and Whiskers is in heaven. You say, "Perfect!"
Don't throw caution to the wind - it's important to factor in predators, disease, and even the next door neighbor bully cat who owns the territory. On the flip side, factor in the benefits of increased exercise, social activity and decreased boredom.
See? No right or wrong answer here. We can all agree that the right thing to do is keep your cat safe from harm. Get them vaccinated. Get them fixed. Keep them out of harm's way! If you really have a lot of free time, teach Whiskers how to fetch. Good luck!
